Lawn mowers are relied on so much more than many people think. It is the one machine in the home that anyone that passes by your home will be able to tell is broken down. It doesn't take long for the lawn to grow out of control, so its best that you do all that you can to protect your lawn mower from failure. Here, you'll find a few tips to help you do just that.

Take it for Repairs

You know you ignore some of the problems that your lawn mower gives you with the hopes that it'll fix itself? Well, guess what? Lawn mowers don't fix themselves. If you hear that it's making a funny sound, stop using it until you get it serviced by a lawn mower repair tech. If you continue to use it even when you know it's not running optimally, you're reducing the life of the machine and probably costing yourself more money in repairs.

Tip: Each spring, take your lawn mower in for professional service. This will help to ensure that the fluids are all changed, the spark plug is in good condition and that the blades are sharp and not broken.

Care for the Deck

Often, the better made lawn mowers rust out before the motor quits running. To prevent this from happening, you must take care of the mower deck. This means spraying the underside of the deck off after each mowing. If you allow all of that wet grass and dirt to remain underneath the lawn mower throughout the season, you are surely going to find rust when you do get around to cleaning it.

At the end of the season, before you put the mower away, make sure that the deck has been completely cleaned. If you've found rust during the cleaning process, it's time to get the wire brush, sandpaper, and rust-inhibiting spray paint and give the underside a good coating. Some people have even used the truck bed lining spray on the underside for optimal protection, but know that this could void the warranty on the mower. If this is too big of a task for you to handle on your own, you can always take it in for repairs.

Sharpen the Blades

Another element that is forgotten too often is the blades. They do get damaged, and they do become dull. Fortunately, you can easily remove the blades and take them to your lawn mower professional to have them sharpened or find replacements if they're damaged.

Talk with your local lawn mower repair technician. He or she will help you find your way to keeping your lawn mower running this season and many seasons after.
