If you recently made the investment in having granite counter tops installed in your kitchen, you are most likely happy with the improved appearance the room has with them present. Granite counter tops will require a bit of maintenance so they do not deteriorate prematurely. Here are some steps you can take to ensure the granite remains in the best of condition for as long as possible with simple maintenance you can do on your own.

Find Out What Type Of Granite You Purchased

If you are unsure as to whether your granite counter tops are purely made of granite or if they have bits of quartz incorporated into the stone, call the installation service to find out before you do a sealant process. A pure granite surface will not require a sealant to be added, but one made with composite materials will last longer if you add this each year. A sealant can be applied with a paintbrush. The solution will fill in any porous sections, making the surface smoother as a result. This will wear away as you use the counter tops, requiring that it is applied again each year to keep the stone protected.

Keep Sharp Items Away From The Surface

While granite is quite durable, it is best to avoid using knives directly upon its surface. Use a cutting board to keep your counters in the best possible shape for a great number of years. It is also best to use pot holders to place your cookware upon instead of directly upon the surface of the stone. The stone can withstand high temperatures, however, if there is a bit of hard debris on the surface, you risk scraping it across the stone as you place a pan or pot upon it. Wiping down the surface before using it will also aid in keeping debris from scratching the stone.

Avoid Using Commercial Products On The Stone

Instead of purchasing a detergent to use upon your counter tops, wipe them with plain water whenever possible. This will keep the stone from fading or gathering a lackluster coating upon it. When there is caked on debris on your counter tops, use a non-abrasive sponge dipped in water to saturate the material. This will soften the debris, possibly allowing you to remove it easily from the stone. Harder to remove debris may require a product made especially for granite. Make sure to rinse the counter tops well after using this type of cleaning agent to remove all remnants.
